Make Agriculture Great Again:
MAHA, The H is for Honest
Let’s be honest with ourselves here: the way we subsidize American agriculture is fundamentally flawed. We pour billions into propping up a handful of major crops (corn, soybeans, and a few others) creating an oversupply that tanks market prices. Then, when farmers struggle because these same commodities are worth less and less, we hand out another $12 billion in bridge payments. It’s a cycle that doesn’t solve the problem; it just kicks the can down the road and puts the burden on the farmer.
However, this isn’t just about economics. By overproducing and subsidizing crops that get turned into high-fructose corn syrup and other low-nutrient fillers, we’re also feeding a public health crisis. We talk about feeding the world, but the truth is, we’re not producing the crop diversity needed to feed America healthily. Instead, we’re fueling diets that rely on ultra-processed ingredients and contributing to rising rates of diet-related diseases.
If we want to make American agriculture truly great—and healthy—again, we need to overhaul those policy incentives. That means encouraging crop diversity and real food production instead of funneling so much into biofuels and a narrow band of industrial crops. In other words, let’s align our agricultural policy with both economic resilience and public health. With the next Farm Bill coming up in late 2026, now is the time to push for these changes.
